Light Libraries initiative

Partner: SolarAidCompleted: 2026 (expected)Malawi

Light Libraries initiativeIn many rural communities across Malawi, access to electricity remains extremely limited. As of 2023, only 15.6 percent of the population has access to electricity, and in rural areas this drops to just 6.1 percent.

For students, this means that learning often stops when daylight fades. Without reliable access to light, studying in the evening becomes difficult, limiting both academic progress and future opportunities.

This is not only an infrastructure issue. It is a barrier to educational equality.

In partnership with SolarAid Malawi, EDUCAT Germany e.V. supported the Light Libraries initiative.

A Light Library works like a traditional library. But instead of books, students borrow solar lights.

Through their schools, students can take a solar light home for a small and affordable fee. This makes clean and reliable lighting accessible even for families who cannot afford to purchase solar products.

The impact goes beyond access. With solar powered light, students can study safely in the evening and extend their learning time. At the same time, families benefit from a clean and environmentally friendly alternative that reduces both costs and harmful emissions.

Lighting Up EducationEach participating school is equipped with solar lights that can be borrowed by students, as well as solar systems that provide light within classrooms.

Through this initiative, EDUCAT contributes to the electrification of 8 schools, expanding access to safe and sustainable lighting for entire school communities.

Why It MattersAccess to light is directly linked to access to education. Without it, learning opportunities remain limited.

By supporting solar based solutions, this project helps students continue their education, protects their health, and promotes more sustainable energy use.

Sometimes, change starts with something simple. In this case, it starts with light.

Expansion of Community Center “For a Better World” for children – Roof

Partner: Engineering without Borders
Completed: 2025
Argentina

In the neighborhood of KM13 in Quilmes, Argentina, many families face economic hardship, environmental risks, and recurring floods. For children and young people, this often means growing up without stable and safe spaces for learning and development.Since 1985, the community center “For a Better World” has been a vital support system in the area. It provides educational activities, meals, and a safe environment for more than 120 children and young people. However, limited infrastructure has made it difficult to meet the growing needs of the community.

To help address this, EDUCAT Germany e.V. supported a key part of the center’s expansion in partnership with Engineers Without Borders Argentina.

They are working with both public and private school teachers to train them in various professional development matters through workshops and seminars in school halls.

Improving Infrastructure Where It MattersAs part of the broader development of the center, EDUCAT contributed to the construction of the roof of the kindergarten building. This intervention plays an essential role in ensuring that the space remains usable, safe, and protected from weather conditions, especially in a region affected by heavy rainfall and flooding.By strengthening this critical part of the building, the project helps create a more reliable and secure environment for children’s daily activities.

A Contribution to Long Term Impact The improved infrastructure supports the work of the center in providing consistent educational and social activities. It benefits over 120 children and young people, as well as the staff and volunteers who are actively engaged in the center. This contribution is part of a larger, community driven effort to improve living conditions and opportunities in KM13.

Why It MattersSafe and functional spaces are a foundation for learning. Even small scale infrastructure improvements can have a significant impact on the quality and continuity of education.By supporting targeted interventions like this, EDUCAT Germany e.V. contributes to strengthening local initiatives and ensuring that children have access to environments where they can learn, grow, and feel supported.
